Lol! Anyway, I hope this helped a little. I'm too afraid to go fiddling around in there with stuff I don't know. There's a lot of buttons that I am not familiar with, and I wish that someone would make a complete guide. You can't really control how many show up, but I like it because I sometimes get a specialist/resources with it. Personally, I go into the events section of the menu and hit 'Force Random Survivors'. I'm not really sure about the spawn citizen button, though. Select the one you want, type the amount you want, and then hit the add button. The boxes usually pop up near the colony gate. Also, the dropdown box below the add button is the one you want to use to spawn them. I'm not sure if you got this fixed or not, but the add resource function populates boxes of said resources on the ground and sometimes it takes an extra minute for your colonists to pick them up and put them in your management bar at the top of the screen.
